What is a Suspension Control Arm?

Control arms are an essential part of any automobile’s suspension system. The control arm attaches the frame of the vehicle to the wheel. There is at least one control arm for every wheel. Most off-road vehicles have two control arms.

Control arms allow wheels to move up and down while maintaining their position within the fender. Without a control arm, the wheels would move back and forth along the length of the vehicle while accelerating or braking.

Control arms are attached to the frame by a bushing that allows flexing in the system. When you hit a bump, the bushing will absorb some of the impacts, reducing the amount of force entering the frame. Control arms attach to the wheel through a ball joint that allows the wheel to turn slightly with the force of the road.

When you bring your vehicle in to our service center here at Dave Syverson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Albert Lea, have the control arms checked for wear.
